“have I gone mad? I’m afraid so, but let me tell you something, the best people usually are.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
How many of you grew up either reading or watching Alice in Wonderland?  It was always one of my favorite movies growing up.  With talking cats, magical potions, a fun and festive tea party, and a crazy queen, I would often imagine what it would be like to be in the world of Alice.

Fast forward many years, as my husband and I were flying to Hawaii on our honeymoon the in-flight movie was the new version of Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp.  I was a little apprehensive to have a remake but it was truly awesome!  The way they portrayed Wonderland was so colorful and lifelike it really made for a great movie.

This week Sunday Supper’s theme is Tantalizing Trays.   That means all the savory and sweet goodies you’d love to find on an appetizer, dessert, or other tray.

Since I love making cookies, I wanted to make a fun cookie that would be perfect for a dessert tray at a tea party or a kids party.  I think you’ll agree these Alice in Wonderland cookies fit the bill.

A few month ago I had a request from someone to make Alice in Wonderland cookies.  When I asked what she wanted exactly she didn’t know except they were for her daughter’s birthday party.  I had a ton of ideas.  Everything from clocks and playing cards to cookies that said “Eat Me” on them.

In the end we decided on 5 different cookies.  I made bottles that said “drink me”, cookies that said “eat me”, playing cards, Alice’s dress, and teapots.  They were super fun to make and were a hit at the party.  They have since become one of my most popular cookies to date.

Alice in Wonderland Cookies (cookie design:  Hezzi-D original, cookie recipe from The Way the Cookie Crumbles)
2 1/2 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
2 sticks butter, softened
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
Royal Icing

1.  In a medium mixing bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

2.  In the bowl of a stand mixer beat the butter until smooth.  Gradually add in the sugar and continue mixing on medium until fluffy.

3.  Add in the egg and vanilla and beat until mixed well.

4.  Place the mixer on low and add in the flour mixture, mixing until just blended.

5.  Knead the dough into a ball and flatten into a disc shape.  Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight.

6.  Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

7.  On a lightly floured surface roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick.  Cut out the desired shapes.  I used a 3 inch circle for the “eat me” cookies, a teapot shape, a rectangle for the playing cards, a dress, and I hand cut the bottles for the “drink me”.  Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 7-8 minutes or until they no longer look wet on top.

8.  Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 2 minutes on the cookie sheet before removing to a wire rack.  Cool completely.

9.  Make a batch of the royal icing.  Divide into 7 bowls.  Dye each bowl one of the following colors:   pink, red, orange, purple, black, light blue, and white.
10.  To make the “eat me” cookies simple make the circle one color.  Then using another color make a cloud pattern around the edges and pipe on the words “eat me”.  For the bottles choice one color for the actual bottle.  Then pipe on a black outline and pipe on the words “drink me” in black.
11.  For the playing cards, fill in the rectangle with white icing.  Pipe on either a red or black number with a heart or diamond in red or a spade or club in black.
12.  For the dress outline the top in white and then taper the bottom in white.  Fill in the dress and front apron.  Then outline the skirt in light blue.  Also place the light blue on the collar and the sleeves.  Finish the dress with pearl accents.
13.  For the teapots fill in the entire pot with one color.  Using a contrasting coloring outline the pot and put on the dots.

14.  Allow the cookies and icing to dry for at least 12 hours but preferably 24 hours.
