Delicious spiced apples topped with a crunchy and buttery oat topping make for the best Warm Apple Crisp.

Every fall I love when the price of apples drops and I can get big bags for under five dollars.   I love baking with apples and just having them around the house as a snack.

For breakfast we really enjoy Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal.  As an after school snack or for brunch buttery Caramel Apple Scones can’t be beat.  For a treat I love these easy Brown Sugar Glazed Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes.   One of the best fall desserts I’ve made are Caramel Apple Pie Bars

However, there is one apple dessert that I always come back to and that is Apple Crisp.  It’s so easy to make, it only requires a few ingredients, and it’s delicious.

What is Apple Crisp?

Apple crisp is a dessert that is made with a streusel topping. It is usually made with apples, butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and often oats, brown sugar, and additional spices.

I like making apple crisp because it’s basically apples tossed with spices and sugar that is topped off with a sweet oat crumble.  It only takes a few minutes to throw it together.

What type of apples are best for making apple crisp?

The type of apple you use is up to you.  Some people like firmer apples. These hold their shape well when baked, resulting in a chunkier apple crisp.   Granny Smith apples and Honeycrisp apples are both firm apples.   Other people prefer sweet and soft apples because they break down more during baking, creating a softer and juicier filling.  Sweet and soft apples include Fuji and McIntosh.  Other people use a combination of apple types.

I normally use Gala or Honeycrisp apples whenever I’m making apple crisp.  However, if I am looking for a sweet and tart crisp then I go with Granny Smith apples.

Ingredients for making Warm Apple Crisp.

Ingredients:

  • apples (use your favorite type)
  • granulated sugar
  • lemon juice (fresh or from a bottle)
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • oats (you can use quick or old fashioned)
  • all purpose flour
  • brown sugar
  • salted butter (or unsalted if you prefer)
  • baking powder

Making the apple crisp is easy.  The hardest part is cutting the apples.  Some people like to peel their apples before they cut them but I just leave the skin on.  It’s totally up to you.

To make the apple crisp preheat the oven to 375 degrees.   Place the sliced apple sin the bottom of an 8 x 8 baking dish.  Add in the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and toss to coat.

In a small bowl combine the lemon juice and water and pour over top of the apples.

In another small bowl combine all the ingredients for the topping.  Mix well until a crumbly mixture forms.  If your mixture is sticking together too much add additional flour and oats.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture over top of the apples in the pan.  Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the apples are bubbling and the crumble on top is golden brown.

The apple crisp smells amazing when it comes out of the over.  The sweetness of the apples paired with the scent of the spices is pure fall.

What can I serve with my apple crisp?

I like to serve my apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  If I don’t have ice cream I usually will put whipped cream on top.  When I can find it I will even use cinnamon ice cream on top of the apple crisp.

Apple crisp is best served warm as soon as it comes out of the oven.  The topping will be crunchy and the apples will be soft and warm.  It’s the perfect combination of flavors and textures.

How do I store Apple Crisp?

I usually just cover the baking pan with foil or plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.  When ready to enjoy you can microwave it though the topping will no longer be crunchy. You can also warm it up in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes to keep the crunch on top.

While apple crisp is one of my favorite fall desserts it’s really great at any time of year.  You can also use the recipe for individual servings and cut the cooking time down by 10 minutes.

Nothing says fall like apple crisp! Well, unless you went apple picking for them. That would be even more fall. This looks simple and deilcious!

    2. Honeycrisps are my go-to, I like the apples to keep some texture and I love the idea of topping it with cinnamon ice cream!
